Bringing Home a Puppy Print E-mail

Being a lifelong advocate for rescue dogs, when my husband and I decided to adopt a second furry companion, I never imagined a puppy. We wanted a playmate for our 2 year old, mix-breed, rescue, Izzi. Our first call was to Speaking of Dogs, the Toronto-based rescue that Izzi came from. There currently weren't any dogs that would be a suitable match but, Lorraine would keep her 'eyes and ears open' for us. I kept a close eye on their Petfinder site to see any new dogs that came in. One day I saw this little puppy face appear, Diva was her name. I thought 'how cute' but, never gave her a second thought as puppies get adopted to new homes so quickly. My thoughts were on a dog that survived puppyhood in a new home because of it's cuteness and now would be given up because it's new family would not put in the time or hard work of training. That is a very common senerio, unfortunately.

I got a message from Lorraine one day telling me that this little Diva didn't even have a foster home! Petopia, a wonderful doggie daycare, had opened their doors to her until she found a home. But, learning the ropes at the daycare was very different than learning how to live in a house. Would we Foster her?, Lorraine asked. So, Izzi and I got in the car and went down to Petopia to meet Diva. We packed her up and brought her home!

The plan was to teach her and nuture her until she was ready to find a suitable 'FURever home'. At only 31/2 months old, she was a little angel and Izzi loved to play with her. Friends and family all met her over Thanksgiving visits and I think every single one of them doubted our ability to only 'Foster' her.

Well, they were all right!

Only a few days passed and we soon realized that we didn't want to see her go anywhere else! Here she is to stay!
